Hi Tigers,
Since O.J. McLaughlin, DHS'60 and I met on June 30, 2000 with Bill Dennler, Exec. Dir of The Toledo Zoo, I and the committee that was formed in the ensuing
days/months have done everything possible to keep the integrity of the tiger and the selection process for all aspects of this opportunity intact. From my seat, we have been very successful in
accomplishing this and have never compromised our values. We have maintained the values instilled in us by those at DHS and our parents.
For the tiger sculpture artist, we searched
country wide last fall and winter for artists that would be interested in participating with us to reach our goal:
A bronze, life-like, life-size tigress with a couple of cubs that would
honor all of the things connected to DHS that are important to each one of us.
That search brought us 14 individuals. They were each sent an Invitation To Participate in our
project mid-March, 2002. We received responses from nine. On April 17, after 3 1/2 hours of discussing proposals, viewing slides of previous work and looking at sketches of how each artist
envisioned our project, the acceptable artists and their work were reduced to three.
Those three individuals were sent another Invitation, detailing our precise specifications and
requiring a clay maquette of their "tiger" for our project to be delivered by June 24, 2002 to the zoo.
Our committee met Thursday, June 27th at 2:00 p.m. All 11 committee
members were present either in person or by digital pics and telephone. Four zoo staff members also contributed and voted. After an hour and fifteen minutes of discussion and viewing three FANTASTIC
maquettes (man, they were good!) we cast a written ballot. Scale of 1-10, please enter a number for each that represents your feeling for the sculpture(s) and artist. Ten being highest. Regina Hyldahl,
Director of Finance for Toledo Zoo, totaled those ballots and we have a winner:
