DeVilbiss HS Alumni Raising Funds for Tiger Plaza at Zoo
TOLEDO, Ohio, April 19, 2001 — Though the school has been closed for 10 years, a number of DeVilbiss High School alumni are engaged in an effort to ensure that Tiger Pride lives forever.
With cooperation from The Toledo Zoo, DHS alumni are raising funds to erect a life-size bronze tiger statue and plaza at the zoo.
“The tiger statue and plaza will not only honor DeVilbiss High School and our school mascot, but the zoo as well,” explained Dave Stout, chairman of the Tiger Statue at the Zoo Committee and a 1960 DHS graduate. “It
will be a natural fit and something that zoo visitors will be able to enjoy for generations, just as they now enjoy the bronze panda and gorilla statues.”
The project will feature a life-size bronze statue of a tiger and two cubs, in a spacious plaza paved with personalized bricks purchased by DHS alumni and family. The plaza will be situated near the current Siberian
tiger exhibit in the zoo’s Tiger Terrace section.
“We’ve already received commitments for the fundraising effort from 50 of the 59 DHS classes,” he added. “Our committee continues to look for and hopes to find representatives from the missing 10 classes.”

As of mid April, the committee had raised more than $31,000, on the way to its $150,000 goal. All contributions to the fundraising effort are 100% tax-deductible. All money raised over and above the $150,000 goal
will be used to create a DHS endowment for The Toledo Zoo to help maintain its tigers exhibit.
Stout said the alumni hope to have the tiger plaza completed by mid summer 2003.
